A governing board needs a balance and diversity of skills, experiences, characters, backgrounds, perspectives, attributes and abilities.

Members

The members of the Mast Multi Academy Trust are guardians of the governance of the trust and must ensure it carries out its charitable objective. 

 

Board of Trustees

Trustees of an academy trust are both trustees of the charity and directors of the company limited by guarantee. The Charities Act 2011 defines charity trustees as the people responsible under the charity’s governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity, regardless of what they are called. They are known collectively as the Board of Trustees.

Trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the trust, and in accordance with the provisions set out in the memorandum and articles of association and its funding agreement.  They are legally accountable for all statutory functions and for the performance of all the schools within the trust; they do this by carrying out the core governance functions.

Trustees contribute to the work of the Board of Trustees in ensuring high standards of achievement for all children and young people across the trust.

 

School Governing Committees

The Board of Trustees constitutes local governing committees to provide links to parents and the community, as well as for providing additional scrutiny of how the trust is managing its schools.

Parent governors play a vital role on the school governing committee, holding the unique position of having a parental viewpoint of the school. Through the children, they have a first-hand experience of the delivery of the curriculum, and how the school is perceived from the ‘consumers’ point of view. This enables parent governors to bring a different perspective to the strategic management of the school.

A community governor is a person appointed by the school governing committee and who has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.  This does not have to be a parent of the school,  it can be anyone who has the time and commitment to make a difference for the school community. 

The role of the staff governor offers an opportunity to make a real contribution to the strategic management of the school, providing an interesting and rewarding dimension to work.
